For amateur bandy teams

Eleven a side on a hundred metres of ice. Don't turn up with nine.

Know by midweek whether you have the eleven, or at least the eight a game can start with, long before anyone laces up.

Ninety minutes on the ice, a week of messages around it.

Two halves of 45, changes whenever you like and a squad list that holds up to 20. Here's the week, with skates on.

BEFORE THE STROKE-OFF

Count the eleven

Eleven makes a full side and eight is the least you can start with. The yes, maybe and no answers are in by midweek, not on the ice.

FIRST HALF

Pick the starting eleven

Goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards, chosen from the people who said yes.

SECOND HALF

Change as often as you like

Bandy lets you change players on the fly, so everyone gets a go. Your squad list holds up to 20 names.

FULL TIME

Put it on the record

The final score, then the goals, assists and saves, entered before the skates come off.

Goals, corners and the keeper

Corners get their own heading, and so does the keeper.

Goals and assists sit under Scoring. Corners won sit under Set pieces, because the corner stroke is bandy's own restart. The goalkeeper's saves, goals against, save percentage and shutouts sit under Goalkeeping.

Coming soon

Years of chasing a ball across a field of ice, and nothing to show for it but frozen toes?

Three goals is only the start.

When milestones go live, benchli will spot it after the final whistle, put it in the team feed and pin it to the scorer's card. Bandy moments, from the hat trick to the goalkeeper who scores.

NotableHat trickThree goals in one game. Common in bandy, still worth a mention.
NotableDouble-digit gameThe team scores ten or more in a single game.
RareGoalkeeper assistThe keeper sets up a goal, usually with the throw that starts the break.
LegendarySeven-goal gameOne player, seven goals, one game. That one gets retold every winter.
The bandy notebook

What bandy gets today, and what it doesn't.

Checked against the published bandy rules: eleven a side, two halves of 45 and a corner stroke of its own. What's already in, and what isn't yet.

Already in the squad

  • Goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward, the four roles a bandy side is picked in.
  • Squads from 8 to 20, because the rules let a team start a game with eight.
  • Changes the way the rule book has them: rolling, with no limit to count.
  • Two halves of 45 minutes as the starting point, and a level game recorded as a draw.
  • Corners kept under their own Set pieces heading, because the corner stroke is bandy's own restart.
  • Goalkeeper stats on their own: saves and goals against in, save percentage worked out, and the shutout counted once a game.
  • Penalties and penalty minutes together under Discipline, for the five- and ten-minute time penalties.

Still behind the boards

  • A points total, goals plus assists, and a leaderboard that ranks by it. Today it ranks goals, then assists.
  • Penalty-shot goals and saves, and goals scored straight from a corner stroke, as stats you can enter.
  • A note that a game was settled by a golden goal or a penalty shot competition, so the winner can be remembered.
  • Rink bandy, six a side, and the shorter halves for younger teams.
  • Venue suggestions that tell a full-size bandy field from an ordinary ice rink.

Common questions

Can we start a game with fewer than eleven?

Yes. The rules let a team start with eight, and benchli sets a bandy game's minimum at eight too. A squad can hold up to 20.

What does benchli call a clean sheet in bandy?

A shutout, shown as SO. It is counted once a game for the goalkeeper, and the save percentage is worked out from the saves and goals against you enter.

Can a bandy game finish level?

Yes. A level game is recorded as a draw. If a game goes to overtime or a penalty shot competition, the way it was settled isn't recorded on its own yet.

We play rink bandy, or we run a youth side. Is that covered?

benchli's bandy starting point is the senior game: eleven a side, two halves of 45 minutes. Rink bandy and the shorter youth halves aren't built in yet. Availability, the schedule and polls work the same for any team.

Does the stats list show points?

Not yet. Goals and assists are both counted, and the list ranks goals first, then assists. There is no points total.
