Nine in the field, plus the DP, the FLEX and the extra player.

Softball has its own cast, and benchli names all of it, so the lineup carries every role the game uses.

From the group chat to the box score.

BEFORE THE FIRST PITCH

Count your nine

Nine take the field, though the Swiss fastpitch league lets you start with seven or eight and takes an automatic out for each empty spot. Get the answers in days ahead, not at the field.

THE LINEUP

Name the nine

Pitcher to right field, then the designated player, the FLEX and the extra player, each a position of its own.

THE GAME

Put the score in

Runs for each side, after seven innings or however many it took. A finished game always has a winner.

EXTRA INNINGS

Seasons of diving catches and dugout chatter, and the only record is a scoresheet at the bottom of someone's bat bag?

A three-homer game deserves a record.

When milestones go live, the team feed will announce them after the game and each one will stay on the player's profile. Softball moments of their own, from a three-hit game to 100 career hits.

The softball notebook

The DP, the FLEX and the box score.

Softball keeps its own books, and benchli has learned a good part of them. Here is what it knows, and what it doesn't yet.

Already in the box score

  • The nine fielding positions, from pitcher to right field, plus the designated player, the FLEX and the extra player as positions of their own.
  • A finished game always has a winner. Level scores are refused, because a league game plays on until one side leads.
  • Hits sit with at-bats and runs under Batting, where a softball sheet puts them, and the pitcher's line has its own heading.
  • Season and career batting average come from total hits over total at-bats, not an average of game averages, so one big game can't flatter it.
  • Innings pitched in thirds, the softball way: 6.1 and 6.2 are real innings and a 6.5 is refused.
  • A pitcher's line of innings, hits, earned runs, walks and strikeouts, kept apart from the batting columns.

Still in the dugout

  • Earned run average, which is earned runs times seven over innings pitched.
  • A pitcher's runs allowed and win or loss, so ten-win seasons can be counted.
  • The batting order in the lineup. Today it is shown by position, not by who bats third.
  • How a game ended: stopped early by the run-ahead rule, or decided in extra innings, plus inning-by-inning scores.
  • Slowpitch as a format of its own, with ten fielders and the co-ed rules.
  • Singles, sacrifice flies, putouts and assists, so on-base percentage, slugging and fielding percentage are possible.
  • A league table ranked by win-loss record, as the Swiss softball league ranks it, instead of points and draws.

Common questions

Does benchli score the game?

No. It doesn't keep a play-by-play scoresheet or report to your league. Keep your official scorer. benchli runs everything around the game and keeps each player's totals.

Does it work out batting average?

Yes. Enter at-bats and hits and benchli works out the average for the season and the career. It doesn't yet work out on-base or slugging percentage.

What does it keep for pitchers?

Innings pitched, hits and walks allowed, earned runs and strikeouts, with innings counted in thirds. ERA, runs allowed and wins and losses aren't worked out yet.

Can we save a game that ends level?

No. A softball game plays on to a winner, so benchli won't save a finished game with level scores. A game stopped level by darkness or weather is replayed from the start under the WBSC rules, so there is nothing to save yet.

What about the run-ahead rule and extra innings?

You enter the final score as it stood. benchli doesn't apply the run-ahead rule or mark a game as stopped early or won in extra innings.

Does it work for slowpitch?

You can run a slowpitch team, pick positions and keep the stats. benchli doesn't yet treat slowpitch as a format of its own, so ten fielders and the co-ed rules are not built in.

Nine named before the umpire calls play ball.
