A face-off to start every quarter.

A lacrosse game is four fifteen-minute quarters, with a face-off to start each one. Here's the week around it.

1ST QUARTER

Count to ten

Ten on the field, one of them in goal, and subs on the fly. See who's in, who's a maybe and who's out by midweek.

2ND QUARTER

Set the lineup

Goalie, defenders, midfielders and attackers, with the long-stick midfielder and the face-off specialist as positions of their own. Everyone reads their spot off the same sheet.

3RD QUARTER

Write up the game

The final score, then goals, assists, ground balls and the goalie's saves, entered while it's fresh.

SUDDEN VICTORY

Level after four?

Record the draw, or the sudden-victory goal as the winning score. Your league decides which.

Face-offs, ground balls and the goalie

Count the face-offs, the ground balls and the saves.

Goals and assists, of course. Plus what a lacrosse scorer looks for: face-off wins and losses with the percentage worked out, ground balls, caused turnovers. Goalies get their own record: saves, goals against, save percentage and shutouts.

Scooped a hundred ground balls and nobody wrote one down?

Ground balls deserve a record.

When milestones go live, benchli will spot it after the final whistle, tell the dressing room and pin it to the player's card. Lacrosse moments, from the hat trick to the goalie goal.

The lacrosse notebook

Face-offs, ground balls and the goalie: what's in, and what isn't.

Shaped by the men's field game. What's already in, and what isn't.

Already on the field

  • Built on the World Lacrosse men's rules: ten a side, four fifteen-minute quarters, a squad of 10 to 22.
  • Six positions, including the long-stick midfielder and the face-off specialist, so the lineup reads the way you'd say it on the sideline.
  • Face-offs get a heading of their own, with the percentage worked out from wins and losses. The season figure is wins over every attempt, not an average of game percentages.
  • Ground balls sit beside goals and assists on the team's leaders list, because that is how a lacrosse side measures its work.
  • Goalies are kept apart, with saves, goals against, save percentage and shutouts. Shooting percentage is goals over every shot attempted.
  • Games start with "Face-off 19:30", not "Starts 19:30".

Still in the locker

  • Sixes and the women's game as formats of their own: six a side in four eight-minute quarters, and a squad of eighteen.
  • Box lacrosse, the third Swiss Lacrosse league, has no format of its own yet.
  • Draw controls, the women's game's version of the face-off win.
  • Points (goals plus assists) as a stat in its own right, to rank scorers the way the sport does.
  • The sudden-victory winner, which needs the order of the goals.
  • Goalie minutes and goals-against average, clears and man-up goals.

Common questions

Does it know a long-stick midfielder from a face-off specialist?

Yes. Goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and attacker, plus the long-stick midfielder and the face-off specialist, so the lineup reads the way you'd write it on the whiteboard.

Is face-off percentage worked out for us?

Yes. Enter the wins and the losses and the percentage follows, for the game and for the season. Save percentage and shooting percentage work the same way.

We play Sixes, or the women's game. Does that work?

You can run the team, the availability and the results today. What isn't there yet: Sixes' own eight-minute quarters, and draw controls for the women's game. Today the game shape is the men's field game.

Can we record a goalie's shutout?

Yes. Goalies get a Shutout stat next to saves, goals against and save percentage, kept apart from the outfield players' sheet.

A full ten at the face-off.
