Four quarters of eight. The week around them.

A game is four quarters of eight minutes' playing time, with the clock stopped for restarts. Here's the week around it.

1ST QUARTER

Count the squad

Up to fourteen on the sheet, seven in the water. The answers come in by Wednesday, not at the poolside.

2ND QUARTER

Find your goalkeeper

The goalie schedule shows which games have someone in goal. A game with nobody shows up early enough to do something about it.

3RD QUARTER

Name the positions

Goalkeeper, centre back, drivers, wings, centre forward. Everyone knows where they're swimming before the first whistle.

4TH QUARTER

Log the result

The final score, then goals, assists, saves and exclusions, entered before you've left the pool.

The water polo notebook

What we know about water polo, and what we don't yet.

Goalkeepers on their own sheet, headings in water polo's order and a goalie schedule. What works today, and what doesn't yet.

Already in the water

  • Squads of up to fourteen, the World Aquatics maximum since July 2025.
  • Five positions: goalkeeper, centre back, driver, wing and centre forward, not a generic list of names.
  • Goalkeepers on their own sheet. When a field player goes in goal, tick "Played in goal" and the saves and goals-against boxes open for that game.
  • A goalie schedule: mark your goalkeepers once and see, game by game, who is in goal and which games have nobody.
  • Headings in water polo's order: Attack, Defence, Goalkeeping, Discipline, General. Exclusions get a place of their own, not buried in General.
  • A level score saves as a draw, because Swiss regular-season rounds can end level.

Still on the poolside

  • Save percentage and shooting percentage, which don't show for water polo yet.
  • Penalty-throw saves and shoot-out saves, so the goalkeeper's two big moments can be recorded.
  • Start minimums by league. Swiss leagues differ (11, 9, 7 or 6 players to start); benchli holds one minimum of seven for every team.
  • Shoot-outs and extra periods on a result, and a table that scores them the league's way.
  • Extra-player (power-play) goals and efficiency, and sprints won.
  • The game-winning goal and the buzzer-beater, which need the order and time of the goals.

Common questions

Does it know a goalkeeper from a field player?

Yes. Goalkeeper is its own position and its own sheet: saves and goals against for whoever goes in goal, and goals, assists, shots, steals, blocks and exclusions for everyone else.

What if a field player ends up in the red cap?

On the game's stats, tick "Played in goal" on that player's row. The goalkeeper boxes open for that game and the rest of their season stays as it was.

Can we bring in a player from another team?

benchli can hold guests, but check your league first. Swiss Aquatics doesn't allow players borrowed from another team in official matches. Friendlies are fine by agreement.

Can I record a shoot-out or extra periods?

You can enter the final score. benchli doesn't mark a shoot-out or extra periods yet, a level score saves as a draw, and its table counts a flat 2, 1 and 0. Check your league's own table for the official standings.

How many players can we have on a match squad?

Up to fourteen, the World Aquatics maximum since July 2025. benchli doesn't check how many are goalkeepers.
