Four quarters. Forty minutes. No draws.

Basketball is a short game on a tight clock, so the sorting happens before it starts.

From availability to the final buzzer.

5

Five to start

Five play at a time, so five is the number that matters. Yes, maybe or no for every game shows whether you have your five and who is still on the fence.

12

Up to twelve in the squad

Name the game squad, from five to twelve players, each with a position: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward or centre.

40

Forty minutes, rolling subs

Four quarters of ten minutes, and substitutions as often as you like. Minutes played go on each player's line.

W

One winner

Level after four quarters? Play on, then enter the final score. benchli wants a winner, as the rules do.

Coming soon

Years of league nights and Sunday runs, and nothing to show for it but a rolled ankle?

A triple-double deserves a record.

The big night you'll hear about all season, the perfect trip to the line: when milestones go live, benchli will catch both after the game and put them in front of the whole team. Basketball moments of their own, set for a 40-minute club game, plus a career points ladder from 100 up to 1,000.

The basketball notebook

Five positions, four quarters, one winner.

Basketball has its own shape: five on court, a clock, no draws. This is what's built in, and what isn't yet.

Already in the box score

  • The five positions, point guard to centre, grouped as guards, forwards and centre.
  • Forty-minute games, four quarters of ten, with match squads of 5 to 12 and rolling substitutions, not the NBA's 48 minutes.
  • A game needs a winner: a level final score is turned back, and the table gives 2 points for a win and 1 for a loss.
  • Shooting percentages worked out from makes and attempts, and summed across the season, never averaged from game to game.
  • Turnovers and fouls count as the stats you want fewer of, and plus/minus is allowed to go below zero.
  • A player's card laid out like a box score: Scoring, Possession, Defence, Discipline, Time on court.

Still in the huddle

  • Quarter-by-quarter scores and overtime. A result goes in as the final score, so a 20-point quarter, a comeback win and an overtime win can't be spotted yet.
  • Buzzer-beaters and four-point plays, which need the order and clock time of each basket.
  • Points added up from your two-pointers, threes and free throws, with a warning if the numbers don't fit. Today points are typed in on their own.
  • The five-foul limit, team fouls per quarter, and technical fouls as their own line.
  • A starting five and a bench in the lineup editor.
  • 3x3 as its own format, with three players a side.

Common questions

Does it run on FIBA rules?

Yes. A basketball game on benchli is four 10-minute quarters, 40 minutes in all, with a match squad of 5 to 12 players. It isn't set to the NBA's 12-minute quarters.

Can we enter quarter scores or overtime?

Not yet. A result goes in as the final score for each side. If you went to overtime, enter the score after it; a level final is turned back, because every game needs a winner.

Does the table count 2 points for a win and 1 for a loss?

Yes, the FIBA way. One gap: a forfeit loss counts as an ordinary loss, where FIBA gives it no points.

Which stats does it keep?

Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, fouls and minutes, plus plus/minus and made and attempted field goals, threes and free throws. Shooting percentages are worked out for you. Rebounds are one total, not split offensive and defensive, and points are typed in on their own, so benchli doesn't check them against the shooting.

Can we play 3x3?

Not as its own format. benchli is set up for five a side, with squads of 5 to 12.
